Over the Moon

So many things to be thankful for as we head into the light…yesterday was the winter solstice, the shortest and darkest day of the year. Now with the waxing of the light, it is time to plant…wishes, intentions, cabbages…hopes for our President to magically grow a pair or a spine or…whatever it is!

On a personal note, I am overwhelmed by the wave of beautiful responses to the new Curios CD Pillow Book. I set out to make an album that might effect people the same way all my favorite albums have done. Judging by the reviews, I think we got there, and I am so very grateful to my band mates for sticking by my side through the rigors of producing such a project.

Then there was the sold out and over the top CD release concert at the Sanchez Center for the Arts. Wow! What an amazing audience. I seriously love you all for being there… The gallery attendants at the art gallery next door were taking turns poking their heads in to catch part of the show, and one of them told me later that it was like watching 200 plus people warming their hands at a fire. That is exactly what it felt like, the vibe in the room was so rich and full and wonderful. We had a blast!!!!

Hope to see you all at the January 9th Salada Beach Cafe show, though you won’t all fit in there…come early for dinner and to get a good seat….xoxoxoxo nancy

 Doing the “The Black Bee”

Andrew and I worked devotedly yet joyfully to finish the graphics for the new CD “Pillow Book” in time for upcoming release….
A friend mentioned that they liked the title poetry-wise, but wondered what made me choose it since a Pillow Book is really an old fashioned “how to” on the art of love.
I own an old edition of the Kama Sutra that is illustrated with crazy-gorgeous Indian miniatures. The figures are meant to be demonstrating skillful and funkified acts of love such as “The Crow” and “The Curved Knot”, and they sometimes look like intense and daunting negotiations. Juicy and difficult all at once…

They reminded me that everyday negotiations can be graceful and/or harrowing depending on the skill and passion of the participants. Making and singing songs is sometimes an effort to understand how to proceed crow-wise or otherwise, even if the information seems cryptic and coded, even abstract, there has to be something visceral that talks more to your bones than your brain. Those are the kind of directions I tend to follow.

 Busy little gnomes…

We are jammin’ hard this next couple of weeks getting ready for the Dec. 12 show. Lee Parvin and Marc Games and Michael Tyler and Jim Kerwin are sharing the stage with me and we are not only doing stuff from the new CD but a few bran new tunes…I guess I should be happy that I write so much but the band gets put through it’s paces always learning new songs. It’s what keeps me excited, always doing something we’ve never done. I like the high-wire aspect of it.

 Mary f’ing Poppins

last night my friend Melinda and I decided it was a good idea to participate in the
Sing-A-Long Mary Poppins at the Castro Theater in San Francisco.
Now, S.F. and especially the Castro is known for people who enjoy dressing up. I mean in real, serious get up! So I went as what I though a very convincing Mary and Melinda was an exquisite if shit covered Bird Lady.

Maybe because it was a Thursday night we kinda stood out as practically the only people in serious costumes, but it turned out O.K. because it ensured a win for our team…Melinda in fact took home the first prize of four passes to the Castro. I was shut out, but compensated by the few folks there who wanted their picture taken with me as a memento. Now I know how the person in the big Winnie the Pooh costume at DisneyLand must feel.

 Welcome…let’s talk!

hey curio friends…thought you might like to put your two cents on this site. Have fun! No fighting…
